Company Overview
About Google
Google is a Mountain View, California-based global technology company — the world's dominant search engine and digital advertising platform — operating Google Search (the most visited website on the internet, processing 8.5 billion+ searches daily), YouTube (2+ billion monthly users, the world's second-largest search engine), Google Ads (the dominant digital advertising marketplace), Android (3 billion+ device operating system), and Google Cloud (the #3 cloud platform). Part of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Google generated $350+ billion in consolidated Alphabet revenue in fiscal year 2024 with Google Services (Search + YouTube + Google Network) contributing approximately $285 billion.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Google's search advertising business (Google Ads) captures the highest-value purchase-intent moment in digital marketing — consumers searching "buy iPhone 15 Pro" or "best HVAC company near me" represent ready-to-purchase buyers that advertisers pay premium CPCs for. The auction-based Search Ads system generates approximately $175+ billion annually, making it the largest single revenue stream in global digital advertising. YouTube's video advertising complements Search's text with brand-building and performance video formats. The Google Marketing Platform connects these channels with analytics, measurement, and campaign management.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
In 2025, Google (Alphabet, NASDAQ: GOOGL) faces transformative competitive pressure from AI: ChatGPT's success demonstrated that AI chat interfaces could answer complex questions without sending users to links — threatening the "10 blue links" search model that Google Search has operated on for 25+ years. Google's response has been AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) in Google Search — AI-generated summaries at the top of search results — which provides direct answers while maintaining the ads-adjacent search result page. OpenAI's SearchGPT and Perplexity.ai are direct challengers. The 2025 strategy focuses on AI Overviews monetization, Gemini model integration across all Google products, growing Google Cloud AI revenue, and defending Search advertising share as AI threatens the traditional search funnel.
The Google Story
Google began as a Stanford University research project called 'BackRub' in 1996, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin were PhD students. They developed a new approach to online search that analyzed relationships between websites, using a mathematical algorithm called PageRank to rank pages by relevance.
The name 'Google' is a play on the mathematical term 'googol,' which refers to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name reflected their mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web. They registered the domain google.com on September 15, 1997.
In September 1998, they officially incorporated Google Inc. and moved into Susan Wojcicki's garage in Menlo Park, California, paying $1,700 per month in rent. Their first investor was Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, who wrote a check for $100,000 to 'Google Inc.' before the company even legally existed.
The Breakthrough Moment
The breakthrough came when Andy Bechtolsheim saw a quick demo of their search engine and immediately wrote a $100,000 check to 'Google Inc.' The problem: the company didn't exist yet. Page and Brin had to scramble to officially incorporate so they could deposit the check.
Original Mission
"To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."
