The Amazon Story

Founded in 1994
Bellevue, Washington (garage)
Founded by Jeff Bezos

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos on July 5, 1994, originally under the name 'Cadabra, Inc.' Bezos was working as a senior vice president at D.E. Shaw, a Wall Street investment firm, when he read a statistic that the web was growing at 2,300% per year. This staggering number prompted him to make a list of potential online businesses.

Bezos decided on books as the first product category because of the vast catalog available and low cost per unit. He quit his job at D.E. Shaw in 1994 and wrote the business plan for Amazon during a cross-country road trip from New York to Seattle with his wife MacKenzie. They settled in Seattle to be close to Ingram Book Group's warehouse and the tech talent pool.

The company started in the garage of Bezos' rented house in Bellevue, Washington. In the early days, Bezos and his small team would drive packages to the post office themselves. When a bell rang on the website indicating a new order, everyone in the office would gather around to see if they knew the customer.

The Breakthrough Moment

The name 'Amazon' was chosen because Bezos wanted something that started with 'A' to appear early in alphabetical listings. He chose Amazon after the world's largest river, reflecting his vision for the company to become the world's largest bookstore.

Original Mission

"To be Earth's most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online."
