Company Overview
About Starlab Space
Starlab Space is a commercial space company developing a continuously crewed space station designed to support research, manufacturing, and scientific work in low Earth orbit. The project originated from a partnership among Nanoracks, Voyager Space, and Lockheed Martin, which was awarded a NASA Space Act Agreement in December 2021. Starlab is intended to serve as a commercial successor to the International Space Station, hosting government, commercial, and academic users conducting microgravity research and in-space manufacturing programs.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
NASA has disbursed $183M of its $218M Space Act Agreement commitment to support Starlab''s development. The Texas Space Commission awarded Starlab a grant through its Space Exploration and Aeronautics Research Fund in 2025. In November 2025, Janus Henderson made a strategic investment in Starlab Space, and the company closed a credit facility led by Texas Capital in December 2025. Starlab completed its Commercial Critical Design Review with NASA in February 2026 and fully booked its commercial payload space by March 2026.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Starlab competes with other NASA Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations (CLD) program awardees, most notably Axiom Space. As the ISS approaches its planned deorbit in the late 2020s, commercial successors like Starlab are critical to maintaining continuous human presence in LEO and preserving the research and manufacturing capabilities that depend on a permanently crewed orbital outpost.
