Company Overview
About Melio Payments
Melio Payments is a New York-based B2B payments platform founded in 2018 that enables small and medium-sized businesses to pay vendors, suppliers, and business bills via ACH transfer, credit card, or international wire — and to send and receive invoices with online payment capabilities. By allowing businesses to pay with a credit card where a vendor only accepts checks or ACH, Melio provides a cash-flow float benefit that is especially valuable for cash-constrained SMBs. The platform integrates directly with accounting software including QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks, and Gusto, enabling automatic bill sync and reconciliation.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
As of FY2025 Melio processed over $30 billion in B2B payments annually and served more than 80,000 US SMBs. In October 2024 the company raised a $150M Series E led by Fiserv at a $2B valuation — down from a $4B peak in 2021 — bringing total funding to $654M. In June 2025 Xero, the New Zealand-headquartered cloud accounting software company, acquired Melio for $2.5 billion in its largest-ever acquisition. Melio continues to operate as an independent brand and product under Xero ownership, with Xero CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy stating the company will continue to invest in Melio's payments product while embedding Melio features into Xero's core accounting platform.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Melio's differentiated positioning is its SMB focus, deep accounting integrations, and the ability to bridge payment method gaps — critical for small businesses managing tight payment windows with suppliers. The Xero acquisition is expected to accelerate Melio's distribution through Xero's network of 4.2 million global subscribers, with US market expansion as the primary strategic rationale.
