Instagram's origin began with Burbn, a location-based check-in app Kevin Systrom built in 2010 while working at Nextstop. The app allowed users to check in at locations, make plans, earn points, and post photos. After raising $500,000 seed funding from Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz in March 2010, Systrom recruited Mike Krieger, his Stanford friend. They realized Burbn was too cluttered and users were primarily engaging with the photo-sharing feature. In a pivotal decision, they spent one week stripping everything except photos, comments, and likes. They added distinctive filters to make iPhone photos look professional, solving the problem that iPhone cameras produced lower quality images. The name 'Instagram' combined 'instant camera' and 'telegram,' reflecting the instant sharing nature. They rebuilt the entire app in just eight weeks and launched on October 6, 2010, exclusively for iPhone. Within hours, Instagram's servers crashed from overwhelming demand - 25,000 users signed up on day one.
