Company Overview
About Graphcore
Graphcore is a British semiconductor company that designs Intelligence Processing Units (IPUs), a class of AI accelerator chips architected specifically for the graph-based computation patterns underlying machine learning workloads. Founded in 2016 in Bristol, UK, by Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles, Graphcore raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors including Sequoia, Microsoft, and BMW before being acquired by SoftBank Group in July 2024 for approximately $500 million.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Graphcore's IPU differs from GPUs in that it stores the model parameters directly on-chip in a massively parallel, bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) execution model — eliminating the memory bandwidth bottlenecks that constrain GPU performance for sparse and irregular computation graphs. The company's Poplar software framework provides the programming model and compiler toolchain for IPU deployments. Under SoftBank ownership, Graphcore received a $450M+ capital injection to fund next-generation silicon targeting AGI-era AI workloads, including plans for a major AI campus in Bengaluru, India.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Graphcore competes primarily with NVIDIA (dominant in training and inference), as well as other AI chip challengers including Cerebras, Groq, and SambaNova. Its acquisition by SoftBank, which also holds a majority stake in ARM, positions it as a potential component of SoftBank's broader AI infrastructure thesis — providing specialized silicon for large-scale model training and inference that complements ARM's CPU architecture licensing business.
