Company Overview
About Stance
Stance was founded in 2009 in San Clemente, California, with a mission to elevate the humble sock into a canvas for artistic expression and technical performance. The brand became known for its innovative fabric technology, bold graphic designs, and high-profile collaborations with athletes, musicians, and artists. Products include performance socks, casual socks, underwear, and apparel lines for men, women, and children. The NBA, MLB, and top music acts have all carried Stance branding, giving the company an outsized cultural footprint relative to its product category.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Stance raised $131 million in venture funding over seven rounds, with a Series D valuation exceeding $400 million, before being acquired by Marquee Brands in November 2025. Marquee Brands, backed by Neuberger Berman, manages a portfolio of lifestyle brands totaling $4.5 billion in retail sales. Alongside the acquisition, Marquee announced United Legwear and Apparel Co. (ULAC) as the core global operator, managing manufacturing, distribution, and retail relationships across all territories except China. ULAC distributes Stance products through more than 1,100 U.S. wholesale accounts and e-commerce channels in 42 countries.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Under the new ownership structure, Stance transitioned away from operating company-owned retail stores — which have mostly closed — toward a brand licensing model focused on wholesale and digital distribution. The brand continues to benefit from its deep sports and cultural roots, with ongoing partnerships and its signature product craftsmanship maintained under ULAC's operational stewardship.
