Company Overview
About Samsung Gear VR
Samsung Gear VR is Samsung's mobile virtual reality headset platform, developed in collaboration with Oculus (Facebook/Meta) and designed to use Samsung Galaxy smartphones as the display and processor for VR experiences. Launched in 2015 and discontinued as a product line by 2020, Gear VR was one of the first mass-market mobile VR headsets, providing a more accessible (and less powerful) entry point to VR compared to PC-tethered headsets like the Oculus Rift.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Gear VR's design inserted a Samsung Galaxy smartphone into the front of the headset, using the phone's high-resolution AMOLED display and processing power to drive VR experiences. The Oculus platform provided the software ecosystem — VR games, 360° video, and apps — giving Gear VR a content library despite Samsung not building a proprietary VR content ecosystem. At its peak, Gear VR had millions of units sold and represented one of the largest installed bases of any VR platform.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
In 2025, Gear VR is a discontinued product whose relevance as a brand is largely historical — Samsung exited mobile VR when the category proved unable to deliver compelling experiences on smartphone hardware compared to standalone headsets (Meta Quest series). Samsung has shifted its extended reality strategy toward mixed reality and AR with the Galaxy XR ecosystem and its collaboration with Google and Qualcomm for a standalone XR headset platform. The Gear VR chapter represents an important transitional moment in consumer VR adoption — it introduced millions of consumers to VR experiences before standalone headsets became the primary platform.
