About SPIC Hydrogen Energy
SPIC Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd. is a technology-focused subsidiary of China''s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), one of the country''s five major state-owned power generation groups. Established in May 2017 and headquartered in Beijing''s Future Science City, SPIC Hydrogen Energy was created to lead SPIC''s hydrogen energy strategy — covering research, development, and high-end manufacturing of hydrogen technologies including proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis equipment and hydrogen fuel cells.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
In December 2022, SPIC Hydrogen Energy completed a Series B funding round raising approximately $645 million from investors including CDBC, Hony Capital, and the National Green Development Fund — one of the largest hydrogen-focused private funding rounds in China. The company is executing major projects including SPIC''s $5.85 billion wind-powered green hydrogen project in northeastern China that will produce 164,000 metric tons of hydrogen per year, feeding into sustainable aviation fuel and methanol production. As part of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), SPIC is building a million-metric-ton green hydrogen base in western Jilin province.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
SPIC Hydrogen Energy operates across the full hydrogen value chain — from PEM electrolysis R&D and manufacturing to hydrogen storage, fuel cell systems, and infrastructure development for transportation and industrial applications. It plays a central role in China''s national strategy to develop green hydrogen as a key pillar of its energy transition.
