Company Overview
About Newcleo
Newcleo is a London and Paris-based nuclear technology company developing next-generation Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFR) designed to run on recycled nuclear waste as fuel. Founded in 2021 by Stefano Buono (former CERN physicist), Newcleo targets the dual problem of nuclear waste accumulation and clean energy scarcity by using minor actinides and plutonium separated from spent fuel as its primary fuel source. This approach simultaneously reduces the radiotoxicity and volume of nuclear waste stockpiles while generating zero-carbon electricity and industrial heat.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Newcleo raised over $125M in 2025 alone — including an $88M round followed by an $85M close — bringing total private funding to more than $755M since founding. The company had over €80M in revenue in 2024 and employs more than 900 scientists, engineers, and professionals across Europe and the US. Investors and strategic partners include Kairos, Indaco Ventures, Azimut Investments, the CERN pension fund, Walter Tosto, Danieli & C., Cementir Holding, and Orion Valves. In Slovakia, Newcleo established Newvys — a joint venture with state-owned decommissioning company JAVYS — to deploy up to four 200 MWe LFR reactors at the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear site.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Newcleo''s LFR design offers inherent safety advantages over conventional pressurized water reactors: lead coolant is chemically inert, does not react with water or air, has a very high boiling point, and provides passive cooling in accident scenarios without requiring active emergency systems. The company is also developing a proprietary MOX (mixed oxide) fuel fabrication capability to close the nuclear fuel cycle. Newcleo positions itself as the enabling technology for a true circular nuclear economy — turning today''s waste problem into tomorrow''s fuel supply for clean energy.
