Company Overview
About Mura Technology
Mura Technology is a UK-based advanced recycling company that developed Hydro-PRT (Hydrothermal Plastic Recycling Technology), a process that uses supercritical water — water above its critical temperature and pressure — to break down mixed, flexible, and multilayer plastic waste into fossil-equivalent hydrocarbon feedstocks. These feedstocks can be used to manufacture new virgin-quality plastics, creating a true circular economy for materials that conventional mechanical recycling cannot handle.
Business Model & Competitive Advantage
Mura has raised $190M in total funding. A $100M investment from engineering and technology firm KBR provided both capital and a global licensing and deployment partner, allowing Mura to scale its technology through KBR''s project delivery capabilities. Other investors include Dow, LG Chem, Igus, and Grow London. Mura''s commercial-scale facility in Wilton, Teesside (UK) commenced construction in 2021 and was set to begin operations in Q1 2026 with 20 kilotonnes per annum (kta) of initial capacity. The company has established licensing agreements for additional sites in the USA, Europe, and Southeast Asia, targeting 1.5 million tonnes of annual recycling capacity in operation or development by 2032.
Competitive Landscape 2025–2026
Mura competes with other chemical recycling approaches including pyrolysis (Agilyx, Plastic Energy) and solvent-based dissolution (PureCycle Technologies). Hydro-PRT''s key advantage is its feedstock flexibility — it can process a wide range of contaminated, mixed, and flexible plastic formats that pyrolysis and mechanical recycling cannot. The backing from Dow (a major plastics producer) and LG Chem validates the output quality and relevance of Mura''s recycled feedstocks to the petrochemical supply chain.
