Getir is the Turkish company that invented the 10-minute grocery delivery model and briefly became one of the most valuable startups in the world before a dramatic retrenchment. Founded in Istanbul in 2015 by Nazim Salur, Getir developed the ultra-fast grocery delivery model—small dark stores positioned throughout urban neighborhoods, enabling delivery of a limited SKU grocery assortment in 10 minutes or less—that inspired a wave of similar startups globally. The company expanded aggressively to the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, and the United States during 2021-2022 at the height of venture capital enthusiasm for quick commerce.

At its peak in 2022, Getir raised $768 million and was valued at $11.8 billion, making it one of Europe's most valuable startups. However, the economics of ultra-fast delivery proved extremely challenging outside Getir's home market: customer acquisition costs were high, basket sizes were small, and the density needed for sub-10-minute delivery economics required enormous capital deployment. In 2024, Getir announced the complete exit from the United States, United Kingdom, and all European markets, refocusing entirely on Turkey where its network density, brand recognition, and lower cost base make the model economically viable. The company reduced its global headcount from 32,000+ to approximately 5,000 employees.
